  6.   INSTRUCTIONS for LOADING & USING FONTS in BUTTERFLY ARTIST
  7.  
  8.   For BEST results FONTS need to be Specially converted & Optimised
  9.   see File CONV_FNT.TXT for details.

  11.  
  12.   LOADING FONTS      (KEY) =  Main Keyboard Key, ie (Control) = CONTROL Key
  13.  
  14.                      CLICK ON ---- "TEXT" Box
  15.                      PRESS -- -- - (Control)+(|\) to bring up FONT Menu
  16.                      CLICK ON ---- "GEM Font laden" [GEM Font Load]
  17.                      CLICK ON ---- Top "nicht belegt" Slot [Not Used]
  18.                                    FILE SELECTOR will come up
  19.                      CLICK ON ---- Required .FNT File
  20.                                    Selected FONT will LOAD
  21.                      [ for ADDITIONAL Fonts CLICK ON ---- "GEM Font laden"
  22.                      again THEN the SECOND  "nicht belegt"  Slot, The File
  23.                      Selector, & SELECT AGAIN as above. Repeat for FURTHER
  24.                      Fonts. The .PRG will TELL you if it has insufficient
  25.                      MEMORY to Load any more Fonts. [ see also SCRAMBLED
  26.                      FONTS under PROBLEMS below ].

  28.   USING FONTS        CLICK ON ---- "TEXT" Box
  29.                      PRESS -- -- - (Control)+(|\) to bring up FONT Menu
  30.                      CLICK ON ---- "Selektieren" [Select]
  31.                      CLICK ON ---- Required FONT NAME from the Fonts you
  32.                                    have already Loaded as above. You can
  33.                                    ONLY USE ONE Font at a time.
  34.                                    The Selected Font will then be available
  35.                                    for use.
  36.  
  37.                      LOAD the Selected FONTs .IMG File on to a spare space
  38.                      on your Drawing. This will SHOW you the appearance of
  39.                      the Font and ALSO the OPTIMISED "h" Settings.
  40.                      
  41.                      PRESS -- -- - (Control)+(+=) OR (Control)+(¯`) untill
  42.                                    the OPTIMISED "h" Value appeares at the
  43.                                    TOP LEFT of Screen.
  44.                      You can NOW USE the selected FONT at its Optimised
  45.                      Best.
  46.  
  47.   UNLOADING FONTS    CLICK ON ---- "TEXT" Box
  48.                      PRESS -- -- - (Control)+(|\) to bring up FONT Menu
  49.                      CLICK ON ---- "Entfernen" [ Un Load ]
  50.                      CLICK ON ---- Name of Font you require to unload
  51.                                    The SLOT will now show "nicht belegt"
  52.                                    again. You can now use this slot for
  53.                                    loading another Font [ but see SCRAMBLED
  54.                                    FONTS in PROBLEMs section below ]
  55.  
  56.   PROBLEMS           All of the FONTS listed on the TWO Discs I have so far
  57.                      converted [ see FONTLIST.001 & .002 ] have been TESTED
  58.                      in BUTTERFLY on my system [ 16Mhz STE 4MB RAM ] and
  59.                      WORK OK. The .IMG Files were produced from Butterfly
  60.                      Artist it`s self.
  61.  
  62.                      I have found the following problems, with their
  63.                      solutions.
  64.  
  65.   TYPING IN          It seems a though you can only GET on SCREEN those
  66.                      Letters of a Font that you can TYPE in FROM the KEY-
  67.                      BOARD. Even if other Letters EXIST in a FONT I have
  68.                      NOT Yet found ANY way to ACCESS them. Some FULL Fonts
  69.                      are included should you wish to experiment.
  70.  
  71.   SCRAMBLED FONTS    You may sometimes get Scrambled Fonts -- that is when
  72.                      you PRESS a KEY you get a DIFFERENT Letter than the
  73.                      one you were Expecting [or a Scrambled part of two
  74.                      letters] This SEEMS to happen with SOME Fonts when you
  75.                      HAVE MORE than ONE FONT Loaded.
  76.                      
  77.                      The answer is to UNLOAD ALL your Fonts and THEN to
  78.                      LOAD ONLY the ONE Font you want into the TOP Slot.
  79.                      This SEEMS to fix the problem EVERY TIME on my System.
  80.                      
  81.                      Loading with the LARGEST POINT Sizes in the TOP Slot
  82.                      and the other Sizes in decending Point size untill the
  83.                      SMALLEST POINT Size in the LOWEST Slot SEEMS to reduce
  84.                      the occurance of the problem, PARTICULARLY when you
  85.                      LOAD several DIFFERENT Point Sizes of the SAME Font.
  86.  
  87.   ? SIGN             If you try TYPING in LOWER CASE letters when the Font
  88.                      you have LOADED is CAPITALs ONLY you will get a "?" on
  89.                      SCREEN. [providing the "?" EXISTS in the loaded Font]
  90.  
  91.                      I have not checked this out yet but this may also 
  92.                      apply to other Letters or Signs which DO NOT Exist in
  93.                      the FONT.
  94.  
  95.   £ SIGN             You WILL have problems getting the "£" Sign typed in
  96.                      in BUTTERFLY. -- If you type (Shift)+(£3) to get the
  97.                      "£" you will get a STRING OF TEXT. This seems to be
  98.                      either due to the UK v GERMAN Keyboard Layout or the
  99.                      use of a redundant [for Germans] Key for the Programme
  100.                      Text option.
  101.  
  102.                      The EASY solution for UK users would be to use
  103.                      FONTKIT.PRG to SWAP the "£" and "$" Signs in a
  104.                      Font and then type (Shift)+($4) to get the "£" Sign.
  105.  
  106.   PASTE/STYLE        You can CHANGE the PASTE Mode of the Loaded & Selected
  107.                      Font, as well as its STYLE using the KEYBOARD in a
  108.                      similar way to the PASTE for LASSO and KOPIEREN [Copy]
  109.  
  110.                      The DETAILS of the options are given below, Please
  111.                      *** NOTE **** however that there are SOME KEY PRESSES
  112.                      that do NOT FOLLOW the SAME Pattern as the Rest.

  114.      (Control)+(!1)  Paste  SOLID
  115.      (Control)+("2)  Paste  TRANSPARENT
  116.      (Control)+(£3)  Paste  Transparent    BUT ANY BLACK under Font TURNS
  117.                                            WHITE.[for BLACK Font]
  118.      (Control)+($4)  Paste  INVERTED *ON*  Shows WHITE Font on BLACK RECT-
  119.                                            ANGLE.[for BLACK Font]
  120.                      Paste  INVERTED *OFF* PRESS (Control)+(£3)
  121.  
  122. ***NOTE***    ON THE FOLLOWING KEYs the FIRST  PRESS turns Effect ON
  123.                                     the SECOND PRESS turns Effect OFF &
  124.                                                      Returns to PREVIOUS
  125.                                                      LOOK of Font.

  127. ***ALSO NOTE**** USE WITH CAUTION --- You can USE MORE Than ONE KEY Effect
  128.                                       on a Font [ eg GREY,BOLD,ITALIC] BUT
  129.                                       there is NO "UNDO" If you go TOO MAD
  130.                                       you may have TROUBLE getting BACK to
  131.                                       the ORIGINAL Loaded Font. You will
  132.                                       NEED to Press the KEYS in REVERSE
  133.                                       ORDER to GET There!!!!
  134.  
  135.      (Control)+(%5)  Paste  SOLID WHITE    Will ONLY Show on a BLACK or
  136.                                            Patterned Background [for BLACK
  137.                                            Font]
  138.      (Control)+(^6)  Paste  BOLD           Increase WEIGHT of Font by 
  139.                                            ADDING Pixels to Width & Height
  140.                                            to give a BOLD Version of Font
  141.      (Control)+(&7)  Paste  GREY           Gives a GREY Effect similar to
  142.                                            FONTKITs Lighten.
  143.      (Control)+(*8)  Paste  SLOPE          Will produce an ITALIC Version
  144.                                            of Font
  145.      (Control)+((9)  Paste  UNDERLINE      Puts an UNDERLINE under Letters
  146.                                            [ You NEED an Underline in the
  147.                                            LOADED Font for this to WORK ]
  148.      (Control)+()0)  Paste  OUTLINE        Will produce a SINGLE Pixel 
  149.                                            THICK Outline of Font [for BLACK
  150.                                            Font ]
  151.  
  152.      **** PASTE TIP *****   For LONG lines of TEXT WIDER than ONE SCREEN -
  153.  
  154.                             When PASTING a STRING of TEXT you have Typed in
  155.                             NOTE the "y" value TOP LEFT of SCREEN for the
  156.                             FIRST [left hand] section of TEXT you Paste.
  157.                             When you come to the SECOND section of text if
  158.                             you match the "y" Value it will LINE UP Ok with
  159.                             the PREVIOUS section - you will ONLY have to
  160.                             Judge the Horizontal SPACING by Eye when you
  161.                             PASTE it.
  162.  
  163.   OTHER ITEMS from FONT MENU
  164.  
  165.           HEADER    This item seems to be INACTIVE
  166.  
  167.           ABBRUCH   [Abort] This WORKS OK but seems unneccessary as it
  168.                             DUPLICATES the NORMAL Butterfly method of a
  169.                             RIGHT Mouse Button CLICK to EXIT a process,-
  170.                             which also WORKS OK here.
  171.  
  172.           PROGRAMM  I have NOT yet managed to get this process sorted out
  173.           MENU [^P] enough to RUN reliably. Nor have I managed to get .FPR
  174.                     Files to do ANYTHING! Lastly I cannot GET any TEXT
  175.                     Files loaded. I DO NOT think this is POSSIBLE! I think
  176.                     that the best you can do is a STRING of about 17 Char-
  177.                     ecters using the PROGRAMM MENU. With a Large POINT size
  178.                     Font EVEN 17 Characters is TOO Many as ANYTHING which
  179.                     goes OFF the EDGE of the Screen is NOT PASTED!!
